Who is Trevor Crump?

Salt Lake City Roots

Trevor is a Salt Lake City born and raised and has lived here most of his life with a few years out of state. He’s been married for 15 years and has three kids – two girls and a boy.

Family Man

At his core Trevor is a “typical boring dad”. His family is his life and when he’s not working he’s spending time with his wife and kids or golfing and tennis’ing with his kids in tow.

Work-Life Balance Journey

Trevor’s journey to entrepreneurial success wasn’t without its challenges. In his early ventures he struggled with work-life balance:

  • Working long hours 8 AM to 2-3 AM
  • Missing important family moments like birthdays and anniversaries
  • Justifying the sacrifice as necessary for the family’s benefit

After 18 months of this grueling schedule Trevor realized it wasn’t sustainable. He made a big shift:

  1. Reevaluated his work hours
  2. Realized not all hours of the day are created equal
  3. Started working early (4:35 AM) for focused, uninterrupted time
  4. Got more done in less time and have better work-life balance

Now he can work on multiple ventures and be done by 5-6 PM to be a full time dad.

Current Projects that Excite Trevor

Trevor is currently involved in several exciting ventures:

1. Bestie Media (Performance Marketing Agency)

  • Specializes in e-commerce marketing
  • Provides strategic consulting for clients

2. LOR Jewelry

  • Managed by a dedicated team, with Trevor providing oversight

3. Bestie.ai (Post-Purchase Survey Platform)

  • Utilizes AI to create surveys and actionable insights
  • Helps e-commerce businesses gather valuable customer data
  • Born from Trevor’s experience with post-purchase surveys at Fawn Design

4. Unstoppable Marketer Podcast

  • Co-hosts the podcast, sharing marketing insights and experiences

Trevor emphasizes that while he’s involved in multiple businesses, they all align closely with his core expertise in e-commerce, allowing for synergies and efficient management.

Tactical and Strategic E-Commerce Advice from Trevor

Content Creation and Personal Branding

Trevor’s number one piece of advice for all businesses is to focus on content creation and personal branding:

  1. Learn to create content
  2. Build a personal brand
  3. Master storytelling

He says in today’s crowded market where starting a business is easier than ever, standing out through stories is key.

Personal or Brand Content

When to create as an individual or as a brand?

  • No one size fits all
  • Both personal and brand content can work
  • Focus on storytelling not constant selling
  • Share behind the scenes, company culture and personal journeys

Examples:

  • Personal brand driving business: Seek Supply’s founder, Ben
  • Brand page featuring founders: Midday Squares

Technology and AI

Trevor says use technology and AI in marketing but with a caveat:

  • AI is great for simplifying and saving time
  • But the human touch in storytelling is key
  • Use AI to do the repetitive tasks and generate initial ideas
  • Always add a human element to content to be authentic

Technology and Human Touch

In the ever changing world of marketing tech Trevor says:

  • Keep the human in marketing
  • Use tech to supercharge processes not replace creativity
  • As tech gets better the need for authentic human content gets greater

Where Does Trevor See the Future of E-Commerce Marketing?

Trevor’s take on the future of e-commerce marketing:

AI and Technology

  • AI will help simplify things and data analysis
  • But content creation may not be as disrupted as we think

The Power of Human Creativity

  • Despite all the tech, personal storytelling and human touch will still be needed in marketing
  • As AI content becomes everywhere, human created content will be more valuable

Attribution

  • Despite all the analytics, attribution of sales to specific marketing efforts is still hard
  • The e-commerce community is still plagued by conflicting data from different platforms

Marketing Tactics

  • Tactics like influencer marketing and user-generated content (UGC) are becoming less effective as they get saturated
  • Marketing trends are cyclical, old techniques often become relevant again

Customer Connection

  • Telling stories and creating personal connections will still be key
  • Marketing will still require a balance of tech and human

Advice to His Younger Self

When asked what advice he’d give to his younger self Trevor said:

“Get to work. I spent a lot of time going to school. I spent a lot of time reading every single marketing self-help book possible but nothing advanced me further than just getting down and working. Even if you have to do it for free for somebody, there’s no better education than the education of doing it yourself.”

This sums up Trevor’s view on hands-on experience and practical learning over theoretical knowledge.

Current Sources of Inspiration

When it comes to books, podcasts or leaders that currently inspire him Trevor said:

“I have not read a book in the last probably three or four years and I’m not listening to any podcasts. I know it sounds bad because I have my own.”

But he did recommend for those just starting out in business and marketing:

  1. Podcast: “Marketing School” by Neil Patel and Eric Siu
    • For beginners
    • 6-8 minute episodes
    • Breaks down specific marketing topics
  2. Book: “Extreme Ownership” by Jocko Willink
    • Trevor reads or listens to this book every year
    • About accountability in all aspects of life
    • Improves personal and professional conduct

Trevor says he’s not consuming a lot of educational content right now but he still gets value out of re-reading “Extreme Ownership” for the lessons on accountability and personal growth.

This sums up Trevor’s current approach of practical application and personal development rather than constantly seeking new information which aligns with his earlier advice of taking action and learning through experience.

Conclusion

Trevor Crump’s journey from work-obsessed entrepreneur to business owner with a work-life balance is a lesson for e-commerce entrepreneurs and established e-commerce business owners alike. His approach of storytelling, authentic content creation and technology is the roadmap to navigating the digital marketing jungle.

As the e-commerce world changes Trevor’s approach of technology and human connection will continue to work. By creating real value, telling stories and using technology to amplify not replace human creativity businesses will be set up for success in the digital world.
