Who is Christina Montoya?

Early Life and Dreams

Christina was born in Texas but raised in California. Growing up with young parents was tough as her mom had her at 18 and was pretty much growing up alongside her. Christina spent a lot of time with her aunt and uncle’s family who played a big role in shaping her into the woman she is today.

From a young age Christina had a love for writing. She would create children’s books using lamination paper to bring her stories to life. This love for writing has stuck and even now writing children’s books is on her bucket list.

Education and Career

As Christina got older her career goals shifted. She thought she wanted to be a teacher and even pursued music in high school, joining top choirs. But after graduation she realized not everyone who is a great singer makes it in the music industry.

Feeling a bit lost Christina worked various jobs before having her first daughter Alana. This experience made her want more stable career options. She went to school to become a registered dental assistant, a job she did for about 5 years.

Becoming a Copywriter

During the COVID-19 pandemic Christina reevaluated her career path. She had always been interested in entrepreneurship, inspired by family members who owned businesses. The pandemic gave her the opportunity to work from home.

Through targeted ads Christina found Sarah Turner’s “Write Your Way to Freedom” program. This comprehensive course taught her not only the skills to be a copywriter but also how to build her own business. Since 2020 Christina has been a copywriter and now runs her own marketing agency.

Current Projects that Excite Christina

Website Copy for a Doula Client

Christina is currently working on website copy for one of her clients, a doula who is expanding her services. The client recognized a need in the market for doulas who have completed their training but don’t know how to start their own business or create a website.

The project involves creating a website targeted towards women’s health providers, offering additional training, business-building guidance, and marketing tips. Christina finds this project particularly engaging due to its potential to help multiple professionals in the women’s health field.

Transition to Launch Copy

Exciting Christina even more is her transition into launch copy. She’s working with a mentor named Danny Page to specialize in this area of copywriting. This new focus allows Christina to expand her skillset and offer more specialized services to her clients.

Tactical and Strategic Copywriting Advice from Christina

Building an Email List

Christina emphasizes the importance of building an email list for businesses looking to elevate their online presence. She explains that email marketing provides a direct line of communication with potential clients, allowing businesses to build trust and showcase their offerings.

Key points about email marketing:

  • Even if you can’t email weekly, a monthly update keeps you connected with your audience.
  • Email lists provide a stable marketing channel, unlike social media platforms that can change algorithms.
  • Offering a valuable freebie as an opt-in incentive can help grow your email list.

Understanding Your Audience

When writing copy, Christina stresses the importance of understanding your audience. Her process involves:

  1. Identifying the target audience’s pain points and struggles.
  2. Understanding what solutions they’re seeking.
  3. Writing in a relatable, conversational tone.
  4. Avoiding overly formal language to make the audience feel like they’re talking to a friend.

Balancing Professionalism and Personality

Christina advises mixing professionalism with personal touch in copywriting. This approach helps to:

  • Establish credibility as a business.
  • Create a connection with the reader.
  • Address potential objections preemptively.

Storytelling in Copy

When it comes to email length and storytelling, Christina recommends finding a balance:

  • Short stories can engage readers and create a connection.
  • Avoid overly long emails that might lose the reader’s attention.
  • Mix storytelling with concise, action-oriented content.

Focusing on the Client’s Needs

Christina emphasizes the importance of focusing on the client’s needs rather than the business owner’s preferences. She advises:

  • Using data and research to understand the target audience.
  • Being honest with clients when their vision doesn’t align with their audience’s needs.
  • Explaining marketing principles to help clients understand the rationale behind copywriting decisions.

Where Does Christina See the Future of Copywriting?

While the transcript doesn’t explicitly cover Christina’s views on the future of copywriting, we can infer from her current focus and experiences that she sees potential in:

  1. Specialized copywriting services, such as launch copy.
  2. Continued emphasis on email marketing and list-building.
  3. Integration of storytelling and conversational tones in professional copy.
  4. Increased focus on understanding and addressing specific audience needs.

Personal Growth and Advice

Advice to Her Younger Self

If Christina could go back and give advice to her younger self, she would say:

“Don’t worry so much about what may go wrong. Instead, think about what can go right if you take this step.”

She reflects that fear of trying new things often held her back in her younger years. Christina wishes she had taken more chances earlier in life, such as discovering copywriting sooner.

Overcoming Current Challenges

Christina acknowledges that she still faces challenges like imposter syndrome. She recognizes the need to:

  • Stop holding herself back due to small fears.
  • Continue pushing beyond her comfort zone.
  • Embrace new opportunities for growth.

Inspiration and Continuous Learning

Christina draws inspiration from various sources:

  • Book Recommendation: “The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson
    • This book emphasizes the compound effect of small, consistent actions towards achieving goals.
    • Christina finds herself returning to this book often for motivation and perspective.

Balancing Motherhood and Entrepreneurship

As a mother of five children ranging from 15 years to 7 months old, Christina faces unique challenges in balancing her family life with her copywriting career.

Strategies for Success

  1. Flexible Scheduling: Christina works during her youngest child’s nap times and other pockets of available time throughout the day.
  2. Embracing Seasons: She views her current situation as a “season” of life, understanding that work-life balance may look different at various stages.
  3. Maximizing Productivity: Even in short time blocks, Christina manages to accomplish significant work, often getting 4-5 hours of work done in fragmented sessions.

Overcoming Interruptions

Christina acknowledges the difficulty of maintaining focus when constantly pulled in different directions by her children’s needs. She’s developed strategies to manage these interruptions and maintain productivity.

Advice to Her Younger Self

At the end of the podcast, Christina was asked what advice she would give to her younger self. Her response was:

“I think it would be probably not worry so much about what may go wrong. Instead, you should just think about what can go right if I make this step.”

Christina reflected that in her younger years, she was often too scared to try new things, which discouraged her from taking action. She wishes she had taken chances sooner, particularly in finding her path to copywriting. Christina believes that if she had discovered and pursued copywriting earlier, it would have been better for her career trajectory.

This advice highlights the importance of focusing on potential positive outcomes rather than being paralyzed by fear of failure. It’s a reminder that taking calculated risks can often lead to significant personal and professional growth.

Books, Podcasts, and Leaders That Inspire Christina

When asked about sources of inspiration, Christina shared all three categories:

  1. Book: “The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson Christina highly recommends this book, describing it as “so good.” She finds herself returning to it frequently for motivation and reminders about the power of consistent, small actions. Key takeaways from the book:
    • It focuses on the compound effect of daily actions.
    • Every small step taken towards a goal adds up significantly over time.
    • Even tiny, daily actions can lead to substantial progress towards an end goal.
  2. Christina finds this book particularly helpful when feeling overwhelmed. It reminds her to take things one step at a time and trust in the process of gradual progress.

While Christina mentioned having inspirations in all three categories (books, podcasts, and leaders), she only specifically named the book in the provided transcript. This suggests that “The Slight Edge” has had a particularly strong impact on her personal and professional development.

These insights into Christina’s sources of inspiration and the advice she’d give her younger self provide valuable context for understanding her approach to both life and business. They underscore her belief in the power of consistent effort and the importance of overcoming fear to pursue one’s goals.

Conclusion

Christina Montoya’s journey from aspiring writer to successful copywriter and agency owner is a testament to the power of perseverance and adaptability. Her insights into copywriting, audience engagement, and balancing family life with entrepreneurship offer valuable lessons for aspiring writers and business owners alike.

By focusing on understanding her clients’ needs, crafting relatable copy, and continuously expanding her skills, Christina has carved out a niche in the competitive world of copywriting. Her emphasis on empowering women-led businesses in the health and wellness industry showcases the potential for copywriting to not just sell products, but to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives.

As Christina continues to grow her agency and explore new areas of copywriting, she serves as an inspiration for those looking to pursue their passions while navigating the challenges of family life and entrepreneurship.
