Who is Eli Adams?

Before we get into the series overview, let me tell you a little about my digital background:

  • Built my first website in 1998
  • Created my first e-commerce website in 2003-2004
  • Took a brief hiatus in retail management
  • 17 years in digital marketing, with a focus on SEO

My SEO journey started with that first website, searching for directories on Yahoo (as Google wasn’t prominent then) to get my site found. That’s where it all began.

Career:

  • Worked at an SEO agency
  • Managed in-house SEO for several companies
  • Moved up to leadership roles for:
    • Paid search
    • Email marketing
    • Digital product management

Current Project: SEO Series

What I’m most excited about right now is this SEO series. It’s a project I’ve been wanting to do for a long time and it addresses several issues I see in the industry:

  1. Misconceptions among new SEOs
  2. Some agencies providing generic, surface level SEO services
  3. Business owners and marketing executives not understanding what SEO can do for them

Series Objectives:

  • Teach SEOs advanced techniques beyond the basics
  • Get agencies to provide more customized, in-depth SEO services
  • Give business owners the knowledge to make informed decisions about SEO services

Tactical and Strategic SEO Advice from Eli Adams

The SEO Education Gap

Many new SEOs are being trained on basic SEO, which is great but limits their skill development. Basic skills include:

  • Title and meta optimisation
  • Keyword research
  • Basic on-page SEO

But there is so much more to SEO especially when dealing with:

  • Large websites
  • Enterprise SEO
  • International SEO

Advanced SEO Skills Needed:

  • Understanding of web development
  • Knowledge of how SEO impacts other business areas:
    • Reputation management
    • Sustainability campaigns
    • Branding initiatives
  • Integration with other marketing channels:
    • Paid advertising
    • Content marketing
    • Social media

Agency Perspective

From my experience working with and at agencies I’ve seen some worrying trends:

  • “Conveyor belt” approach to SEO services
  • Lack of deep website analysis
  • Generic audits that focus on basic issues like:
    • 404s
    • Internal linking
    • Title and meta tags

These surface level approaches often don’t deliver value to clients and can lead to disappointment and mistrust in SEO services.

How to Elevate Agency SEO Services

  1. Deep dive into each client’s website
  2. Full audits not just basic checks
  3. Customised strategies for each client
  4. Up to date with latest SEO trends and algorithm changes
  5. Transparent reporting

Where Does Eli See the Future of SEO Going?

The future of SEO is bright. Here are some trends and developments I see:

  1. AI Integration: As AI gets better, it will be more involved in SEO.
  2. Voice Search Optimization: With voice activated devices on the rise, voice search will be key.
  3. Mobile-First Indexing: As mobile usage grows, mobile will remain #1.
  4. User Experience (UX) as a Ranking Factor: Search engines are putting more weight on user experience so it’s a must for SEO.
  5. Video SEO: With video content on the rise, optimizing for video will be important.
  6. E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness): Not a direct ranking factor but E-A-T will guide content and overall SEO strategy.
  7. Local SEO: As search gets more local, local search will be key for businesses with locations.
  8. Technical SEO Advancements: As websites get more complex, technical SEO will be hot.
