Who is Charles Floate?

Charles Floate grew up in a small village outside Birmingham, UK, the second city in the country. His village is now famous due to the TV show Peaky Blinders, was a quiet place with a population of around 10,000 when he was growing up.

Early Entrepreneur

Unlike the rest of his family who were blue and white collar, Charles was an entrepreneur from a young age. This was unusual for his family and led him to look beyond traditional career paths.

Dislike for School and Employment

Charles hated school and working for others. He says it was his authority complex that made him want to do things his own way rather than follow instructions from others.

Early Career Success

At 17 Charles got a junior SEO job. Just before his 18th birthday he was offered head of SEO in London for £100,000 a year. But he still didn’t like working for others and left after 3 months to start his own business.

SEO Breakthrough

Charles’s career changed when he was the first person to guest post on Matthew Woodward’s blog (MatthewWoodward.co.uk). This opened doors in the SEO world and brought him more consulting clients and recognition in the industry.

Tactical and Strategic SEO Advice from Charles

Charles shared valuable insights on various SEO tactics and strategies during the podcast. Here are some key takeaways:

Parasite SEO

Parasite SEO involves using high-authority domains that allow you to build or buy posts or microsites on their platforms. This tactic leverages the existing authority of these domains to rank for specific keywords.

Key points about Parasite SEO:

  • It exploits Google’s preference for link authority and certain specific signals.
  • It can be highly effective but comes with some risks.
  • Charles recommends using affiliate links or similar strategies to maintain plausible deniability and reduce the risk of penalties.

Internal Linking

Charles emphasizes the importance of internal linking as a crucial SEO tactic. He suggests a balanced approach between manual and automated internal linking:

  • Manual internal linking should be used for quick wins or high-priority pages.
  • Automated internal linking can be risky for new or low-authority sites.
  • Semi-automated tools like Inlinks or Link Whisper can be effective for managing internal links at scale.
  • For large-scale sites, Charles recommends a system of page rank sculpting to distribute link equity effectively.

Meta Titles and Descriptions

Charles stresses the importance of well-optimized meta titles and descriptions:

  • Meta titles are the first crawlable text in your file, making them crucial for SEO.
  • He recommends using all 62 characters of the meta title to include relevant keywords while maintaining a natural-sounding structure.
  • For homepages, consider targeting keywords like “niche store” or “niche online store” to capture additional search traffic.

Schema Markup

Charles recommends using schema markup to enhance your site’s visibility in search results:

  • For WordPress users, he recommends the Yoast SEO plugin for implementing schema.
  • Always validate your schema using Schema.org’s Validator to ensure Google can understand and use it.
  • Stay updated on new schema types released by Google and test them for potential ranking boosts.

User Engagement Signals

Charles discusses the growing importance of user engagement signals in SEO:

  • Recent leaks and legal proceedings have confirmed that Google does use Chrome data and user engagement metrics in its ranking algorithm.
  • For small businesses, even simple actions like asking friends to search for and click on your site can have a positive impact.
  • Gamification of forms and interactive elements on your site can significantly increase user engagement.

Top 5 Ranking Signals

Charles shares his perspective on the top five ranking signals:

  1. Links (especially for competitive keywords)
  2. Content and on-page optimization
  3. Internal linking
  4. User engagement signals
  5. External factors (trust signals, social signals, etc.)
