Who is Joshua Halpern?

Early Years and Global Exposure

Joshua Halpern grew up on Long Island, New York. From a young age his mom sent him abroad for summer programs. This early exposure sparked his interest in international affairs and travel.

Academic and Early Career

Joshua attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, got a BFA in acting. His love of international experiences led him to teach at a boarding school in England for a couple of summers during college. He also got certified in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) so he could travel while teaching English.

First Business

After college Joshua moved to Spain where he started his first company. The business taught language through the arts, combining theater, music, juggling and acting to help students learn languages and cultures. This lasted for 4 years and laid the foundation for his future career in international business and cultural understanding.

Transition to Nonprofit and Social Work

Upon returning to the US Joshua worked in nonprofit education, focusing on gang violence prevention. This involved bringing together diverse groups like gang leaders, police officers, school principals and gang members’ moms for unique team-building exercises. The goal was to strip away societal layers and have participants recognize their shared humanity.

Diplomatic Career and Ecommerce

Joshua then went to China where he started the Beijing Improv Theater Troop. This was not explicitly a cultural exchange or democratization through art but it was. Later he joined the U.S. Foreign Service and served as a diplomat and further developed his skills in international relations and cultural understanding.

He then entered the world of ecommerce where he uses his many skills to help businesses navigate global markets.

Tactical and Strategic Global Ecommerce Advice from Joshua

Leveraging Social Media for Market Research

Joshua emphasizes the importance of using existing social media data to gauge international interest:

  1. Analyze your Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook marketing reach beyond your domestic market.
  2. Identify countries where you already have a following, even if it’s small.
  3. Use this data as a starting point for potential market expansion.

Testing New Markets

When entering a new market, Joshua recommends a cautious approach:

  1. Start with social commerce platforms like TikTok or Instagram.
  2. Conduct A/B testing on content to see what resonates with the local audience.
  3. Focus ad spend on social commerce-related activities in the target market.
  4. Once you reach a critical mass, consider logistics like local inventory and returns management.

Utilizing Cross-Border Enablement Tools

For businesses looking to sell internationally without a local presence, Joshua suggests:

  1. Enable cross-border payments and fulfillment on your existing platforms.
  2. Use plugins like Zonos for Shopify to provide automated international checkout.
  3. Implement currency conversion based on the visitor’s IP address.
  4. Consider using fulfillment services like Sky Postal for Latin America or Easy Post for other regions.

Exploring Marketplace Options

Joshua advises considering marketplaces as an entry point to new markets:

  1. If already selling on Amazon, consider unlocking Amazon buttons for international markets.
  2. Look into local marketplaces like Mercado Libre in Latin America or Shopee and Lazada in Southeast Asia.
  3. Use Amazon’s multi-channel fulfillment solution to leverage their logistics network without selling on their platform.

Understanding Cultural Differences in Business Practices

Joshua stresses the importance of adapting to local business cultures:

  1. Be prepared for different onboarding processes and customer expectations in various markets.
  2. In some Asian markets, customers may be more tolerant of less polished services but expect detailed documentation.
  3. European markets may require more regulatory compliance and control.
  4. Adjust your sales and customer engagement strategies based on local preferences.

Building Trust in Cross-Border Transactions

To build trust with international customers, Joshua suggests:

  1. Offer free shipping and returns for a limited period when testing a new market.
  2. Understand that the lifetime value of a cross-border consumer is often higher due to increased loyalty.
  3. Focus on removing barriers to purchase, such as concerns about product authenticity and sizing accuracy.

Collaborating with Complementary Brands

Joshua recommends seeking partnerships with brands that have complementary products or target similar customer profiles in overseas markets. This strategy can help leverage existing market knowledge and customer bases.
